                                 Knothead

2007 - 2009 Director
He has been a clown since 2000. He's not a very good clown, and he can't put on make up very good, but we figured since he keeps coming around, we might just as well put him to work doing something.

He's been a clown since 1999. Good guy, good clown, he kinda has a wierd love for John Deere green, but that's as bad as it gets.

Smokey

2008 Assistant Director, 2010 Assistant Director
A new clown, he was selected as our Rookie Clown of the Year in 2006. He has to drive a long way just to come and play with us. We're glad he makes the drive.

2008 Clown of the Year
2006 Clown of the Year
Serving in the umpteenth year as treasurer of our unit. He is the fiscally responsibile one, and as such is sometimes called cheap. I like to think of him as being a good steward of our dollars. He was selected as Shriner of the Year in 2005, and Clown of the Year in 2006.

          Raspy

A clown since 1997, Raspy has been an award winning clown wherever he competes. Althought Raspy moved to Michigan about 5 years ago, he is still a member or our unit. We don't get to see him near as often as we would like to, but are always pleased when he can squeeze us into his schedule.
Update 09/07/08 - Raspy flew down to Topeka this weekend to come to our annual Clown Picnic. It was a wonderful surprise and we wer all was very pleased to see and visit with him.

What
2008 - 2010 Secretary

Joined the clown unit in 2002. We also share him with the escorts. Most years at the Kansas Shrine Bowl, he also serves as a game official.

2010 Director

Joined the unit in 2004. He is constantly learning and then teaching new balloons and tricks and gags to some of the rest of us. I've known him my entire life and he's been teaching me the whole time. Some of the stuff he taught me is even good stuff.

O'Bob

His name is O'Bob, but this is a picture of him in his 'Crow Bob' costume. Even though his body is a few years older than a teenager, his body forgot to tell his brain. Young at heart, he walks, runs, and bounces on a pair of stilts. Good clown and a good guy.

    GiJo

One of our young clowns. He has a clown pedigree. His dad is O'Gee, and his favorite uncle is Knothead. In addition, he has gone international. While serving in Iraq, he clowned around with the local kids. We have pictures of him with the local kids, and he has them wearing clown noses. He is also the guy to put the framework for this website together.
Update: April 2008, GiJo is serving in his second tour of duty in Iraq
Update: September 2008, he should be coming home from Iraq in the next month or so

            Happy

An Emeritus clown, he joined the clown unit in 1990. We shared Happy with the Divan for a number of years as he moved up the line and served as Potentate. We are very pleased to have him back full time now. He brings smiles to the the faces of many children.

 PoPo

PoPo joined the unit in 1993. He has served as the director of the clown unit, and as the president of the Central States Shrine Clown Association. PoPo is well known and loved throughout Northeast Kansas in particular, and the midwest in general. Kids want to play with him, other clowns want to be like him.
In 2009, PoPo achieved 100 consecutive circus performances and began on his second 100.  At 6 performance per year, that is 16 plus years of never missing a circus performance.  Truly awesome.

 Willie

Willie joined the clown unit in 2002. He has consistently fared well in clown competitions. We have shared Willie with the temple as he served as the Public Relations and Membership directors. In those capacities, he was also able to promote clown - dom. He has been on the TV and radio as Willie promoting different events. He also served as director of the clown unit for a couple years.

Sassy
Sassy joined the clown unit in 2004. In 2005, he was all set to compete at CSSCA in Kansas City. A lawyer, he had a court date in the afternoon in Topeka. He got up early, put on makeup, drove to Kansas City, and then hurried up and waited to compete. That day, the rookies were competing last.  He didn't get to compete. He had to come back to Topeka for the court date instead. That day made me admire his dedication to both the clown unit, and his job.

Thirsty
Thirsty has been a clown since 2003. He has been instrumental in making our annual Silent Auction Fund Raiser a great success. He's a good guy and we're lucky to have him.

 ToJo
ToJo has been a member of the clown unit since 1993.  We can count on ToJo to help us with a few circus performances and fund raisers each year. A busy small businessman with his own veteranarian clinic, he still finds time to squeeze some clowning around into his schedule. We'll take him whenever we can get him.

Whitey

Whitey's like a dang boomarang. He moved away, and now he's back.
In the 80's or 90's , before a job change moved him out of state, he served the unit as director. Now that he's back, he serves the temple as treasurer, as well as serving the unit as our reporter for the Antics. He is a wealth of knowledge about the unit and we all learn from him. He's a wonderful resource. He's been a clown since 1984.

Clumsy
To me, Clumsy has the absolutely best clown make up I've ever seen. He's been a clown since 1997. In all of his years as a clown, he has never missed a circus performance. Clumsy squeezes as much time as possible in with us, but he is the father to two pretty good high school athletes. Nobody is going to fuss about him missinig a clown event so he can be with his girls. He'll have more time for us later.

 Cookie
Cookie, he's a past director of the clowns, past president of CSSCA, past Potentate of our temple, served as treasurer for the temple for many years, and is the 2006 Noble of the Year. Cookie always has a smile on his face and always has a joke to tell. He knows pretty much every skit ever and is a wonderful resource to have around. It always gets one or two notches sillier when he is in costume.  He's celebratinig his 40th year of clowning this year.

Grumpy
Emeritus clown who joined in 1978. Grumpy still works hard for us. For the past 3 or 4 years, he has coordinated the Chili Feed from soliciting donations, to selling tickets, to shopping for the supplies. At CSSCA in Overland Park in 2005, he was recognized as the oldest clown competing that day. Grumpy took up golf just a few years ago and already has a hole in one. I'll bet he wasn't Grumpy THAT day !!!!

 JoJo
Joined in 2002. JoJo joined the unit and started out real active and served as our secretary for a year or two. JoJo has become a little less active with the clowns as he gets a little closer to the east in his lodge. He's a good clown with a unique way of signing his name in the circus book. We commend him for his progression thru the chairs of his lodge and look forward to the day when JoJo can come and clown around with us more often.

Lumpy
Emeritus clown who joined in 1991. In his retirement, he seems to keep moving from city to city, but no matter how far away he moves, he seems to be able to find his way back to our gatherings. He regularly participates in competition with the unit. We're just happy that in all of his travels, he makes it a point to travel back to Topeka to see us sometimes.

P J
Joined the unit in 2002. P J and Fergie both joined the unit when they were still students at Kansas State University. Now that they've both graduated and have been working on their careers for a little while, our goal will be to find out how we can help them, and how they might be able to help us. P J helped coordinate one of our major fund raisers in 2007.

  Pete
Pete joined the unit in 2004. I don't know how to classify Pete. I think that he could best be described as a Happy Hobo. Pete enjoys parading whenever he can and like all of us, loves the circus and spending time with the children.

Pudgy
One of our newest members, he joined in 2005. Pudgy has a clown pedigree, or clownigree (new word I just made up). His father in law is Sparky. He has a really nice costume and makeup. Sparky has been mentoring him well.

Sparky

Joined the unit in 1995. Before he retired, he was a welder, hence the clown name 'Sparky'. He preceeded 'Cookie' as the 2005 Noble of the Year. I've often thought that I hope that I can get up and down as good as he does when I'm his age. He is constantly down on one knee giving a little kid a hug and then popping right back up again. We share him with the Legion of Honor and the Hospital Dads. Of all of the visitors to the the St Louis hospital, he is the only guy that they will accept the donation of used stuffed animals from. That's because of the wonderful job of cleaning them that he and his wife do. In addition to the shrine, he also clowns around all over town for other events. Always near the top as a salesman of tickets to various fundraisers.

Tiny

A clown since 1996. You can't tell it from his driver's liscense photo at the left, but he really isn't very Tiny at all. He's about 6' 5" of litttle kid huggin, autograph signin, chili cookin, pretty good clown. Always there in the background if we need him, and then he steps forward when we ask him to.

 Tracks

He joined the unit in 1991 and achieved his emeritus status in 2006.
He also retired from work last year, so I'm thinking that 2006 was a pretty big year for him although it has me just a little bit confused.
If you're a bum/hobo/tramp, and then you retire, does that mean you have to get a job now ? How does that work ?

   Bubby
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
One of our newest clowns, a character who joined us in late 2006 . During the circus, he came back from a break after going home and he had a brand new wig and a brand new nose that arrived in the mail that day.

Lewy
A brand new clown in 2007, Lewy brings an enthusiasm to all that he participates in. He has been getting a lot of practice putting on makeup since joining the unit. Quite the balloon twister. I've been trying to learn from him.

 Captain Teriffic
He's the man in red. Balloon twister extrordinaire. He has twisted balloons all over the world. It's a good ice breaker when there are language barriers. Amazingly, he doesn't even use a balloon pump. He does this gag with the tail of a balloon poodle that makes me smile every single time.

Guppy
Guppy the clown comes to us from Texas in early 2008. He was a Shriner down there, and then he transferred up here with his job and was immediately befriended bt the Clown unit welcome wagon committee who meet most Friday nights at the lounge.  His make up looks great, I wish could do as well. We look forward to having him in make up and clowning around with us.
Cactus
We have Cactus on loan from his home temple in Illinois. We look forward to llearning from Cactus. He is an award winning clown in all categories in the Great Lakes Shrine Clown Association where he served as president. Cactus is also an accredited ISCA Clown judge. He been a clown for 24 years. The Arab Shrine Clowns are privlidged to help help him celebrate his silver anniversary of clowning next year.
2010 - Cactus has agreed to serve ISCA as education director

 Milo
2009 Rookie Clown of the Year
Joined our unit in November 2008 after coming thru ceremonial in October 2008. We welcome this new Noble and his lady into our group. They're a fun couple.

Paddy
He's been on loan to the Divan. After serving as Potentate in 2009, he's back as a clown. Welcome back Paddy

Snickers
Based his clown name off of his favorite candy bar. Snickers joined us in late 2009 and this picture was taken on
January 30, 2010. Snickers is currently serving on the Divan, he has a couple years left with them before we get him full time, but we're willing to share. We're like that. .
